What readers are saying

Now you would think that a US Navy SEAL would write about their heroic actions under fire on super dangerous mission, but this SEAL has written a book about those times when not in combat but in more relaxed times, and I can honestly say the book is superb, it really did make me laugh out loud and took me back to the good ole days of a rather less PC version of the world.
The stories of the authors down time with his colleagues in the SEALs makes excellent reading, and it really does show that Special Forces really are special for a variety of reasons!
I thought the book was hilarious, a real pleasure to read and a book I found hard to put down, I read it in two sittings.
If you are on holiday or want a relaxing read then get this book, its brilliant!
I would love the author to do another book but on his combat missions, but I guess those are classified.

This was a really well written historical nonfiction book, it had that feel that I was looking for and thought worked in telling a interesting story. Tom Mixon was able to weave a strong tale and had that research element that I was looking for and enjoyed getting into this piece of history.

The author takes you through his life leading up to how he enlisted, and of course, if you are going to be in the Navy, it is going to be in the SEALs. Everything about him, from his childhood and leading up to joining the Navy, was exactly the way you would have him showing up on the first day and being yelled at, not just for the way he looked, but also for how he dirtied the Deck when he showed up. The book is very different than other military or even Sea, books and that is what made this book a fun and very fast read. This is very much a book that is worth the read.

Caution: If you go further you will no doubt become convinced that this is a book you simply must buy. Tom's writing style and humor is quite infectious.

Prologue

This book project, like my Naval Special Warfare career and subsequent work in the private professional security contracting arena, is all predicated on a dare. I wish I could claim that my military career was a result of single-minded preparation coupled with a correlating set of specific coincidences, but instead, I’m the victim of a ruthlessly executed ambush by my resilient father, hell-bent on “saving my life,” in a restaurant in Houston, Texas. You will read about it later.

During my eight years of military service, SEAL Teams were kept shrouded in mystery. These were the 1980s, and Al Gore had not yet invented the internet. Additionally, the SEAL community was not on Hollywood’s radar. The existence of a kick-ass waterborne special forces team operating within certain confines of the United States Navy were known, but only marginally and only on a “need to know” basis. Most of those in uniform who were aware of the existence of SEAL Teams and their activities either loved us or loathed us. We were a military enigma. As highly trained, self-supportive, small direct-action units, we were ridiculously successful in the execution of the unique missions assigned to us. Away from the battlefield or training exercise environments, SEAL Teams fell within a spectrum ranging from an inconvenient necessity to an outright boorish rogue element of marauders devoid of self-discipline or military bearing. During my career, specifically the second four years, these sentiments landed almost entirely on the latter end.

During this second military term, I served with a formidable and highly specialized small unit that was created in the mid-1980s to engage and suppress the rise of global terrorism. It was a classic Hollywood extravaganza—a harebrained “black” program featuring a group of snake…
